Trick Counting
The three card tricks described in this chapter are based on tricky
counting sequences that outwardly appear quite acceptable. However,
although perfectly plausible from an audience stand point, they are in
reality rigged to produce certain predictable end
results.
'Fidgety Digit' is an example of how a performer can force a successful
conclusion to a trick merely on a basis of his interpretation of the
card results. As an elementary example
of a forcing technique, let it be required that one of four cards is to
be forced. The performer places the four cards down in a row with the
card that he wants selected as one of the inner cards. Following this he
calls for a number between one and four. Then depending on
whether two or three is called out, he starts the count from either the
left or right to make the count end on the card that he wants selected.
In 'Fidgety Digit', the forcing technique is not quite so obvious, but
it is just effective in bringing the trick to a pleasing conclusion.
