Fidgety Digit

Presentation

The performer hands out a deck of cards with the request that the spectator shuffle the deck, select and remove one card and return the deck without the selected card. Taking back the deck, the performer turns away from the audience and requests that the selected card be held up and revealed to the rest of the spectators for identification. This being done, the performer faces the audience and lifting a small packet of cards from the face down deck instructs the spectator to return his card at the cut position. The performer then replaces the packet of cards he holds over the selected card position, squares the deck and places it face down on the table.

The performer now explains that he will mentally project a number between five and ten to the audience by telepathic communication. Selecting one of the spectators, he asks this person to reveal the number he has mentally received. No matter what number is
given ( 6, 7, 8 or 9), this number proves capable of disclosing the position of the selected card in the deck that is resting on the table.

Method

On turning away from the audience, the performer quickly locates an eight and nine –spot card and repositions them by placing the eight-spot card at the bottom of the deck face down and the nine-spot card next to this bottom card face up. He then counts off a packet of six cards from the top of the face down deck and it is this packet that he lifts off from the deck as he turns to face the audience.

The selected card is returned, the six card packet is placed on top, the cards are squared and the deck is placed on the table face down. At this stage and not before the performer proceeds with the number telepathy hocus-pocus. A number between five and
ten will be forthcoming ( 6, 7, 8 or 9), any one of which is capable of disclosing the selected card.

Number 6: Count down and discard six cards. The next card that is turned over will be the selected card.

Number 7: The selected card is the seventh from the top

Number 8: Show that the bottom card is for some mysterious reason also an eight- spot. Add to the top of the deck and count down eight cards to disclose the selected card as the eight card.

Number 9: Have the pack cut and the cut completed. Spread the facedown deck on the table in an overlapping ribbon fashion, find the only card that is face up ( the nine-spot),and count down to the ninth card from this nine-spot card to disclose the selected card.

Explanation

The explanation is obviously related to the forced interpretation that is given to the number received by the performer from the spectator. This card trick cannot be repeated since a different method of counting on a repeat performance would immediately alert the
audience to the counting subterfuge used to make the card trick workable.

Comments

A definite amount of showmanship should be used in selecting the person to announce the mentally transmitted number that was projected from the performer to the audience. Avoid any person who might be suspected of being an accomplice of the performer.
