Birds of a Feather
Presentation
The performer explains that with proper persuasion, cards that are
numerically alike tend to group themselves into compact unit bearing out
an old proverb that "birds of a feather flock together". The performer
sorts through a shuffled pack for a purpose of selecting at random (?)
three cards of the same numerical value. They are then placed face down
to one side in a single heap.
The performer states that he will proceed to separate them physically by
interspersing indifferent cards between them. He does this by dealing
off a face down card from remaining deck onto the table. On this is
placed one of the six-spot. This is followed by another six-spot. This
six card packet is now placed face up on top of the main deck. The back
of the deck is now slapped several times with the explanation that this
gives cards of like numerical value a chance
to become integrated into a tight grouping. On dealing out the top three
cards from the face down deck it is found indeed that the three six-spot
cards have mysteriously become positioned next
to each other.
Method and Explanation
The performer takes back a shuffled deck and while openly sorting
through the deck to remove three cards of the same numerical value, he
first notes the numerical value of the card that is third from the top
of the face down pack. He then removes the other three cards of the
same numerical value. Hence , when he places these three cards that are
numerically alike in a face down pile on the table, he also knows that
the fourth card having this same numerical value
is third from the top of the pack that he holds in his hands. In the
subsequent alternate deal as given under presentation, the last top
three cards that are dealt must necessarily have the same
numerical value since the last indifferent card that was dealt was not
indifferent at all but rather was a card of similar numerical value to
the original three cards placed on the table.
Comments
The only flaw to this card effect is the fact that of the three cards
of similar numerical value that are disclosed at the end, one has a
changed suit. Hence to direct attention away from this fact, the
performer should stress the numerical similarity of the cards that he
shows and ignore any reference to colors or suits.
If working the trick at a table, the performer can also try the
following expansion of the effect. While the cards of similar numerical
value are being inspected, the performer can hold the pack under the
table and secretly transfer the top card of the deck to the bottom. This
exposes
the fourth card of similar numerical value at the top. Casually
replacing the pack on the table he can at his discretion reveal
this fourth card as exciting climax.
